Dear Jeff and Mickie and beautiful musical creatures all around,

I’ve spent so many years supporting musicians and building music karma credit for myself that I’m hoping what went around will keep on getting around!!!!

Some of you already know I’m looking for music I can use as soundtracks to the Art and You videos I create…

I happen to have started a new career as a art news director :) I’m launching a new web platform on artistic creation. It’s got various aspects to it, including virtual galleries, interactive exhibits, a shop, etc…, and one of them being an e-mag.

The website is in its beta version. I’ve been using music for the videos pieces I make on galleries, art fairs, artists, workspaces, etc… Sometimes I take a whole song and it illustrates the short video as is. Sometimes it’s just a bit of the song to illustrate an interview.

The videos are streamed on our website (fyi, the site will be down for the next couple of weeks, because we’re building the full version with all its functionalities), but they’re also on our Apple podcast, on google video, lulutv.com, youtube, dailymotion, wideo, vpod.tv (, for vpod.tv, look up Art and You)…
There’s of course no commercial transaction around the videos.

So far, I’ve only asked friends of mine, and have used songs by Parts and Labor, Sad Little Stars, Spottiswoode, Bronwen Exter. Next ones will be songs by Trevor Exter, Ben Nicolle (French musician), and other musicians who are more or less family… I credit the band/artist at the end of the video with a “Music courtesy of xxx”.

Thing is, the videos are starting to get around, people like them a lot, and I’d like to have more quality songs to choose from (I’m horribly picky), and share the exposure in return.

If there was any hint to a commercial transaction on a video, the artist would be immediately contacted for permission, of course, and an offer. On that note, I’ll add that I’ve been hired to direct corporate videos for a company’s many websites, and will start on that in the Spring, so I might then ask permission for music use on those films if given the choice of music in some cases. But that’s another thing altogether, and would involve fees and contractual conditions, of course.

So there, you have the whole deal. It’s a start-up asking artists to lend their music free of rights in some respect, with the hopes that the start-up will become something huge and some day be able to compensate the artists for their generous support, but meanwhile offering yet another way for music and names to circulate wildly around the internet…

Mad love,
MN

ps: could anyone tell goddesslike Regina Spektor I’m going to see her tonight in Paris and if she wants to give me a song to put images onto, I’ll jump up and down in joy like 18 months old Clarisse does when she wakes up in the morning? Thanx.
